Wondering about an ingredient? Visit cosmeticsdatabase.com

AMY GOODMAN: We’re  joined from Washington, DC, by Jane Houlihan, the vice president for research at the Environmental Working Group and the creator of Skin Deep, which is an online cosmetics safety database. The database provides safety ratings for more than 62,000 products on the market and receives, oh, more than a million hits per month.
Jane Houlihan, we want to thank you very much for joining us. Explain what this database is. How can people use it? And what is it based on?
JANE HOULIHAN: It’s at cosmeticsdatabase.com, online. We launched it in 2004. It contains safety reports for 60,000 products on the market. It’s backed up by government studies and testing that give you in-depth information about what exactly is in your products. When you get online and use it, you’ll find more than 500 products that contain ingredients that are banned in other countries. You’ll find a hundred products that contain ingredients that the industry itself has said are unsafe in cosmetics. And you’ll find that 99 percent of the products you find in our database contain at least one ingredient, and many times dozens of ingredients, that haven’t been assessed for safety by the FDA, by the cosmetics industry itself, or any other publicly accountable institution. Like your previous guest, Stacy Malkan, you can log on, look up your products, and see how many cancer-causing chemicals are in your products, how many compounds linked to hormone disruption and other basic health problems. This is an industry that’s self-regulated, largely, and what we find across the industry, with our Skin Deep database, is that companies are making very different choices about what’s safe enough to use in these products.
ANJALI KAMAT: Jane Houlihan, who are the worst offenders? What would you say are the most dangerous products that are very commonly used?
JANE HOULIHAN: Dark permanent hair dyes are linked to cancer. When you use those for a long time over your lifetime, those can be quite toxic. Nail care products tend to contain some of the most hazardous ingredients. But we also find carcinogens in baby products. We find skin lighteners that contain chemicals linked to cancer. So, a really broad range of issues. One very problematic area is sunscreens, which are poorly regulated in the US. We found that we could recommend only eight percent of sunscreens on the market that could really give you broad spectrum protection you need to prevent—help prevent skin cancer and also that don’t contain hazardous ingredients that can seep through the skin and pose other kinds of health concerns.
AMY GOODMAN: When you’re looking, for example, at sunscreen, what should you avoid? What are the eight percent that you recommend?
JANE HOULIHAN: You should look for zinc and titanium. Those give you good broad spectrum protection. You should avoid a very common sunscreen chemical called oxybenzone. That’s a potent hormone disruptor, potential hormone disruptor for people. It’s in about 60 percent of all products. And this year we’re also recommending that you avoid vitamin A in sunscreen. We think of vitamins as very good for us, but on the skin, a new FDA study shows that vitamin A could actually increase the risk for skin cancer when it’s applied on the skin.
AMY GOODMAN: What is the hope? What are people to do—men and women, girls and boys, infants?
JANE HOULIHAN: Right now, it’s very much a "buyer beware" market. Our work since 2004 shows that so many products contain ingredients that flat-out haven’t been assessed for safety in a public way, so companies are making their own decisions. What we really need is change at the top level, where we’re seeing in federal law a safety standard for cosmetics, so these companies have a level playing field, and so when you go to the store, you know that what you’re pulling from the shelf is safe enough to use. Right now what we have is a system that requires each one of us to get educated on what’s in our products. You can use Skin Deep to get easy-to-use, free safety reports for the products you use every day and search for safer products that way. What we need, in the end, is a system that, at the very highest level, ensures that we have safe products on all of our store shelves for everyone in our families.
AMY GOODMAN: The website is cosmeticsdatabase.com
JANE HOULIHAN: Cosmeticsdatabase.com is the website. You’ll find 60,000 products, about 8,000 ingredients, and free online safety reports there that are easy to use and great for finding safer products and helping you bring safer products into the home for your family.
AMY GOODMAN: Jane Houlihan, I want to thank you very much for joining us, vice president for research at the Environmental Working Group and creator of the Skin Deep database.

I always welcome questions and I 'm always happy to research ingredients on your behalf.  Give me a call. See you at the Spa, Shannon

A little about myself and Le Reve

A writer from 805 Living recently asked me a series of questions for an article she is writing and I thought I would share with you what I wrote. Some things you may already know and some things you may not.
My Name is Shannon Neels, I'm the sole proprietor of Le Reve Organic Spa and Boutique. Le Reve is located in downtown Santa Barbara. Le Reve Is the 1st and only certified green spa in Santa Barbara and we use only organic ingredients in all of the spa treatments. Le Reve's core philosophy is to provide nurturing therapeutic treatments in a healthy sustainable environment and we have been doing just that since 1999, long before being "green" was the hip thing to do. I wanted to own my own business and I knew that I wanted to focus on women and their health. 15 years ago when I started researching spas I instantly knew this was my passion.
From the beginning I wanted to set Le Reve apart from more of the outward beauty aspect and focus on the health and wellness aspect. Le Reve achieved this by specializing in Facials,Massage Body Treatments, education and leading by example. What I love the most about Le Reve is that it is constantly evolving. I'm forever researching and implementing new treatments and new and improved green business practices.Le Reve attracts a clientele that is choosing businesses that support their lifestyle philosophy.
If you choose to eat well, shop locally, farmers market, recycle, compost, exercise, take time to invest in your health internally and externally you will choose Le Reve. You should choose Le Reve and make facials and massage an integral part of your health care regime.
Le Reve, unlike many other spas uses not one organic product but all organic products. Unlike some spas we do not cary 3 chemical based skin care lines and 1 organic line. We only carry products that support our belief in choosing green and organic all the time, not just some times.
Le Reve gives back to our community in several different ways.I founded Angels List, a foundation that provides free services to those that have cancer.I started providing free services to women with cancer when I first opened Le Reve and lost a client to cancer. Unfortunately every one knows someone who has cancer and Le Reve can't take care of everyone for free so thats how and why I came up with Angels List. I needed more Angels like my staff to help. Angels List acts as a conduit to connect volunteers to those going through cancer treatments. "Angels" can sign up to volunteer any number of services such as dog walking, grocery shopping, life coaching, yoga, hypnotherapy and spa services. Each service provider at Le Reve volunteers by giving 1 complimentary service every month. We sponsor a person throughout their cancer treatments and up to 3 months following.A person who has cancer can sign up on www.angelslist.org. Once they have signed up they can view the list of "Angels" and contact the one offering the service they would like or need. Hopefully Angels List of volunteers will grow all over the US and every person in every city whop has cancer will have an angel sponsoring them in some way. Le Reve provides gift bags for volunteers and staff when a school or non profit is having a fundraiser. We find that those who give the most often receive the least so we give back to the givers. We also try to get involved in as many local events as we can such as our upcoming Women's Festival March 5th and 6th. My personal passions go hand in hand with my professional passions. I'm one of those lucky few who get to have a job they really love. Sometimes the line becomes a little blurry about where my personal life begins and professional life begins. I'm very proud of the integrity of the products, treatments and services I offer. I have always felt a professional responsibility to my clients to give them green and organic choices. My biggest challenge Is balancing my personal life ,starting a family and being a wife. Finding the right staff is always challenging. I can train anyone to give great facial but I can't teach that person to love their job and actually really care about their client. I I feel very lucky, they always seem to find their way to Le Reve. I feel very blessed to have a growing and thriving business in this difficult economy. I contribute our success to being green and organic on every level and in all that we do at Le Reve, an amazing, educated and caring staff, continually growing and improving and giving back however we can.
Thank you, See you at the Spa, Shannon

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2008 USLBA Award Program focused on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USLBA and data provided by third parties.
