First let's talk about what waxing is and it's benefits. Waxing is a form of semi-permanent hair removal in which hair is removed from the root. Sounds painful, I'm not going to lie, it can be a tad uncomfortable when you're first starting out. However, it can be more tolerable and guarantee your return if you have a Licensed Esthetician who's been trained in the proper protocol to minimize discomfort and complications.

There is some preparation on your end before your wax appointment. It's best to exfoliate prior to your wax service and make sure the length of hair is at least 1/8-1/4 in. The longer the better! The more follicles/roots that can be pulled, the cleaner the wax, the longer it is going to last and the happier you are going to be! The "grow out" stage is often the most difficult step, but the longer the hair is, the cleaner the waxing will turn out.
Always be honest with your Esthetician about medications (including antibiotics) you are currently taking or have taken recently. Here is a list of products that can contraindicate your wax: Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, Renova or Retin-A (currently or in the past month) Accutane (currently or in the past three months). Strengths vary with these products so some people may not have any reaction at a lower strength. However, if you are using these products and do not inform your Esthetician, you can lose a thin layer of skin with the wax which can cause abrasion and injury.
Aftercare is super important. You want to avoid sun exposure for 24-48 hours after being waxed. Avoid hot showers (stick with lukewarm) until any redness subsides (usually 2-3 hours), hot tubs, steamrooms and saunas. If you are getting a bikini wax, make sure to wear loose clothing until the redness subsides. If clothing is too tight it can cause irritation. You want to exfoliate the day before a bikini wax but also 7-10 days after to avoid ingrown hairs. Dry brushing is a great way to do so and you can do it every day before your shower to keep dry dead skin sloughed off.
